Ericsson achieves network slicing end-to-end breakthrough on live 5G SA

At MWC Los Angeles, Ericsson showcased a live 5G SA network data session using its 5G Cloud Core and Ericsson Orchestrator, and at the other end of the demonstration environment was a terminal containing a MediaTek Helio M70 modem.

The photograph above from the event shows Ericsson’s Erin Liao and Arvinder Anand at Ericsson’s Standalone 5G Network Slice demo; thank you to Ms Liao for showcasing the terminal containing MediaTek Helio M70 modem.

The MediaTek Helio M70 is a multi-mode (2G-5G) modem that supports both standalone and non-standalone (SA/NSA) sub-6GHz (5G NR) networks.

This event follows the June 2019 demonstration between Ericsson and China Telecom, which successfully achieved a 5G SA end-to-end data call on the service provider’s 5G trial network in Hangzhou using a terminal containing the MediaTek Helio M70 modem. For that 5G call, Ericsson’s new standalone 5G NR software was deployed together with Ericsson’s 5G Cloud Core solution.

5G SA will be the eventual architecture of 5G radio networks. It increases network efficiency and enables new use cases through full end-to-end network slicing and provision of Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC).

In light of this achievement, MediaTek’s General Manager of Wireless Communication Systems and Partnerships, JS Pan, stated,

“MediaTek is glad to be part of this successful demonstration of a standalone 5G connection using the MediaTek Helio M70 5G modem: a multi-mode (2G-5G) modem that supports both standalone and non-standalone (SA/NSA) sub-6GHz (5G NR) networks. Showing an advanced 5G NR deployment coupled with a new 5G core will lead to better coverage and network capacity, plus the foundation for ultra-low latency connections. It will pave the way a new wave of supercharged applications that require real-time responses and massive connectivity.”
