5 Astrospace Objects to Observe as a Stargazer

You have a brand new telescope; you are armed with the latest equipment and ready for stargazing and astrophotography. So. Where to start observing?

Space is as magnificent as it is enormous. The universe is expanding or shrinking continuously from infinity to infinity. With a telescope at your fingertips and space that is now accessible with a wink of an eye, you might get overwhelmed with the prospects of celestial bodies. This blog will help you observe the space step-wise, in accordance with the telescope you possess, the best location and time to follow the celestial body and start your journey of space watching with style.

Choosing time and place
You can set up your observatory for space study of some of the planets right at your backyard. Near objects like the moon and earth satellites are visible and can be tracked for their orbit, phases, and visibility. But for dimly lit things like the milky way galaxy and nebulae, you will have to find a quiet, dark location, above the ground level so there is minimal light pollution and extra clear and focused results.
But you have to consider the portability of your telescope, the time it will take to reach the location, and hope for ideal weather conditions at the same time.

The telescope that you have
The telescope is your portal key to enter the universe of stars and planets. The quality and clarity of the objects you observe in space depends on the type of telescope you use. But as a beginner to space watching, you might want to be careful of what you spend on a telescope alone as you will require an equatorial mount as well to track the space objects and align the telescope appropriately. It will calculate the earth’s rotation speed and adjust the angle concerning the object under observation in space.
– Refractors: although the best choice for affordable and low maintenance telescopes, the cost increases dramatically with the lens’s aperture. Make sure you have the one that magnifies enough for the planets to be visible without burning a hole in your pocket.
– Reflectors: with a mirror for reflecting the magnified and focused image, the reflector telescope is best for observing planets and objects at a greater distance. But it requires alignment and focus shift every once in a while.
– Compound telescopes: a combination of lens and mirrors, compound telescopes or Cassegrain are a lightweight star tracker that is a bit expensive but worth every penny.

A Peek at these celestial bodies in space
Now that you have figured out the compatibility of your telescope, its mount, and the location and time for you to space out, you can get started with the following observations. Don’t forget to maintain a log of your comments and questions.

1. Planets: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn – Planets are one of the major attractions for the stargazers since all of them have indigenous characteristics which showcase diversity with respect to color, shape, size, and moons.
a. For example, Mars, also known as the red planet, has multiple phenomenons worth observing, such as dust storms; land formations, polar ice caps. It is the closest to our home planet and is speculated to be home for life forms many decades ago.
b. When you see Jupiter through a telescope, you will perceive its four moons, known as the Galilean moons, which play hide and seek with you.
c. Saturn’s rings serve as a unique sight to behold. And to think that these circles confused the greatest minds of history, tricking them into believing that saturn is a three unit planet. Refractor and reflector telescopes are ideal for viewing these planets from your backyard.

2. Galaxies
a. Andromeda and the three planets: andromeda is the farthest galaxy that is visible without a telescope. But your telescope may offer an obscured view of the three significant planets as well. All you have to do is find a high ground on a night of summer in the northern hemisphere. You might have difficulty spotting it initially, but you will get there; space watchers must have patience and perseverance.
b. Milky way: our home galaxy has more dark matter than andromeda and is a lot closer(duh!). You can observe the shades of the milky way, and the stars against the dark background is a sight worth beholding!
3. Earth satellites, including natural satellites, Craters of the moon: Satellite watching in the summertime can become very interesting as you first go through the relevant information about them. There’s satisfaction in confirming the facts and theories laid down by the astronomers and scientists. One of the most significant artificial satellites you can begin with is ISS (International Space Station); another low orbiting space satellite you can witness is China’s Tiangong-1 space laboratory. These human-made creations will enhance the experience twofold. Earth’s moon is also a satellite, but a natural one. Maria is a beautiful flat gray patch on the moon worth viewing when gazing in the moon’s direction.
4. Constellations. While the naked eye can identify constellations, there is a thrill in observing the same with a telescope. There are seven significant constellations easily observable through the lens of a refractor telescope. Some of them are Leo, Taurus, Gemini andromeda, Orion’s belt, Ursa Major, and Ursa minor.
a. The Orion constellation acts as a guide for the Orion Nebula, which lies south of the Orion belt. It is the place where stars are born at a rapid pace. You can observe the sight of M42 and a quadruple star trapezium within M42 with an x40 magnification of the naked eye.
b. Hyades and Pleiades: the two-star clusters are in the north of Jupiter. These star cultures are easily visible with a bit of effort and small scope as they are closest to the earth.

Conclusion
So it’s time for you to set up a date with outer space. With stargazing as your hobby, you will never get bored of the mysteries space has to offer. Although it has a learning curve, you will master it quickly and easily with this comprehensive guide for significant aerospace objects and planets. Give yourself time to adjust to the dark as you stare into the telescope.

And above all, be patient: all good things come to those who wait.
