Android Could Go 64-Bit in 2023, Starting With the Pixel Tablet

At Google’s annual Google I/O 2022 presentation, we saw a new model of the Pixel tablet. The detailed functionality of the device remains a secret, but some sources are already making assumptions. All we know for sure is that the release is planned for 2023. Rumor has it that the new Pixel tablet could only be released with 64-bit Android 13, automatically making it the first Android device not to support 32-bit.

In general, support for 64-bit Android applications was added 8 years ago, in 2014, with the release of the Android 5.0 Lollipop. But support for 32-bit programs did not stop. It was the ARM v8 architecture that made it possible to support 64-bit hardware on smartphones.

Over time, developers began to switch more and more to such bit programs. Since Android is an open-source project, it lets us know that the Android 13 release also came with a large copy of the code. We learn that the codename for Google’s upcoming Pixel tablet is Tangor. “Move tangor to 64-bit only,” it reads. Carrying this information over to the end device, there is a good chance that the new tablet will be the first known Android device to disallow 32-bit apps from being downloaded.

If you compare a 32-bit program and a 64-bit program, the latter wins. A more powerful program improves memory usage because it takes up less storage and is more efficient. Modern mobile app development services company MLSDev now uses the most compelling developments. A few years ago, Apple completely abandoned the support of the 32-bit version, and of course, Google will want to support this trend.

Another reason why this can happen is the chip manufacturers. The basic idea is that the designs on which most mobile processors are based, namely Arm chips, are rapidly moving to 64-bit architectures after the already introduced asymmetric chips, where only a minority of cores support 32-bit applications. Introduced a few months ago, the Cortex-X3 and Cortex-A715 processor cores support only 64-bit processes. Furthermore, even the revised Cortex-A510 only offers additional 32-bit compatibility upon special request.

How will this affect the average user?
In reality, there’s not much chance you’ll notice much difference in use, even if Google agrees. Play Store 2019 introduced the release of mandatory 64-bit versions, and later in 2021, all applications placed in the Play Store had to comply with this point. Based on this data, we can say that all recently updated applications will only work with 64-bit devices. If you plan to launch an application meeting the new standards, ask for services known for the cost of developing an app: https://mlsdev.com/blog/app-development-cost.

On the other hand, there are still a considerable number of people in the world who use Android phones and tablets that have processors with 32-bit CPU cores. It is doubtful that Google will stop supporting 32-bit applications. It will become possible only when the number of users using less powerful cores will decrease quantitatively in the coming years.

In conclusion
Of course, this is all just speculation. We will see the final result at the presentation in 2023. But such a course of events, which we described above, should not come as a surprise to you.
