How Custom DTF Transfers Are Revolutionizing Apparel Printing
Screen printing remains a top pick for DIY heat transfers, but Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfers are a better fit for many projects. This revolutionary new printing method offers far more freedom and flexibility. Let’s explore what custom DTF transfers are and when to choose them.
What are Direct-to-Film Transfers?
Short for Direct-to-Film, as the name suggests, the text or design is printed directly on film using CMYK ink. As long as self-weeding sheets are utilized, the finished design is both weed-less and cut-less. Unlike other transfers, the bottom layer of the film is printed in white. This ensures that the design can be transferred to any color apparel with full-color saturation.
Now let’s dive into the top benefits.
#1 Vibrant Multi-Color
In addition to the white base layer mentioned above, DTFs can print designs featuring multiple colors without layering—and without an additional cost. Choose any colors you want without compromising quality or vibrancy.
#2 Print on Any Textile
Another draw is that DTFs can be transferred to a variety of textiles.
This includes:
Cotton
Polyester
Cotton/polyester blends
Denim
Leather
And more!
#3 No Minimum Order Quantities
Setting up DTFs is far easier than setting up screen printing, so there’s no minimum order requirement. While bulk order discounts still apply, there’s less likelihood of over-ordering to meet the minimum.
#4 No Size Limitations
Now artists, brands, and designers can order the same design from infant through adult plus size and in miniatures for caps, pockets, and small garments without paying setup fees for each size. Custom DTF transfers can also be ordered in extra-large sizes that are far larger than screen-sized limitations.
#5 Rapid Turnaround
At AMS Transfers, we’re able to process all DTF orders within 1 business day. So, when inspiration strikes, there’s no delay in receiving a new design!
#6 No Heat Press Required
While DTFs can be transferred with a heat press, they can also be transferred with a standard iron. The process is fast and easy and takes about 30 seconds under 300 degrees of heat.
#7 Fully Customizable
Our design tool is easy and intuitive, allowing designers to upload original works of art or create their own within our design software. Select the print size, then upload a design and add text or select graphic elements from our catalog. Then size, tilt, align, and adjust the color.
Are Custom DTF Transfers Always The Best Option?
Nope, not always. While revolutionary, DTFs aren’t the right choice for every design. The downsides include:
– Thin line limitations: although designs can be complex and detailed, if they have fine lines and thin details another printing method may be a better fit.
– Textile flexibility: Custom DTF transfers are printed with ink that is a bit thicker and heavier than other inks. This may not be ideal on ultra-thin cotton and textiles.
– Color precision: if the color needs to be precise, this isn’t the right printing method. Expect a 5 to 10 percent variation in PMS codes.
– Durability: while durable, the lifespan is a bit less than other printing methods. Proper washing, drying, and care will extend the lifespan.
