Meet the Award-Winning RugOne Xsnap 7 Pro

Most rugged smartphones are designed around a familiar formula, combining reinforced construction, extensive waterproofing and a large battery inside a body capable of surviving conditions that would quickly overwhelm an ordinary handset, but the RugOne Xsnap 7 Pro approaches the category from a far more imaginative direction, introducing a compact action camera that can be physically detached from the phone and mounted almost anywhere. This unusual combination transforms the device from a conventional rugged smartphone into a complete mobile recording system, allowing users to capture hands-free, first-person footage without carrying a separate action camera, remote control and charging solution. The concept has already attracted industry recognition, with the Xsnap 7 Pro receiving an IFA 2026 Innovation Award for its integration of a modular action camera into a rugged smartphone. Presented at IFA Berlin as a new approach to outdoor imaging and mobile connectivity, the device is intended for adventurers, cyclists, hikers, travellers, content creators and field professionals who want to remain connected while recording experiences from perspectives that are difficult to achieve with a phone held in the hand. RugOne describes the award as recognition of the product’s design, practical utility and hardware integration.

A 39g camera that can leave the phone behind
The defining feature of the Xsnap 7 Pro is its 39g magnetic action-camera module, which normally sits securely within the rear of the smartphone but can be removed almost instantly whenever a more flexible shooting position is required. Once detached, the camera can be attached to a helmet, bicycle handlebar, backpack strap or magnetic pendant, opening the door to immersive point-of-view footage without forcing the user to hold the entire 477g phone throughout the activity.

This modular approach feels particularly relevant in real-world situations where a smartphone camera would normally be inconvenient or unsafe to operate, whether the user is cycling along a difficult trail, climbing, skiing, exploring a cave or simply trying to record a journey while keeping both hands free. RugOne is also building an accessory ecosystem around the module, including a magnetic pendant, universal mount, protective case and dedicated charging dock, giving the small camera considerably more versatility than its integrated design might initially suggest.

The action camera records video at up to 2.7K resolution and 30 frames per second, while its 133-degree field of view captures a much broader perspective than a traditional smartphone camera. Intelligent distortion correction is designed to prevent the extreme stretching often associated with wide-angle optics, while SteadyX electronic stabilization and 360-degree Horizon Lock help maintain smoother, more level footage when the camera is exposed to sudden movement, vibration or rapid changes in orientation.

RugOne has also included several recording modes that make the module useful for more than simple point-and-shoot clips, including FreeFrame video, time-lapse, slow motion and loop recording, together with a pre-recording function capable of preserving up to 30 seconds of footage from before the record button is pressed. That last feature could prove especially valuable during unpredictable outdoor activities, where an interesting moment often happens before the user has time to react.

Independent recording with the phone as its power base
Despite weighing only 39g, the detachable camera can operate independently for up to 40 minutes and contains 64GB of onboard storage, which RugOne says is sufficient for as much as eight hours of 1080p footage. When the module is returned to the phone, recorded material can be transferred to the handset’s much larger 512GB internal storage, while the smartphone’s battery automatically begins recharging the camera.

This relationship between the two devices is one of the smartest elements of the design, because the Xsnap 7 Pro effectively becomes the camera’s storage hub, charging case, wireless controller and large-screen preview monitor. RugOne claims that the phone can completely recharge the action-camera module up to 20 times, potentially extending total recording time to approximately 800 minutes, although real-world endurance will naturally depend on resolution, wireless monitoring, ambient temperature and general phone usage.

The Xsnap Go application enables wireless monitoring and media management through the phone’s 6.67-inch display, with a quoted connection range of up to 50 metres in suitable conditions. This means the camera can be mounted away from the user while the smartphone provides a live view for framing, remote operation and reviewing captured material, a setup that could be useful for recording vehicles, wildlife, sports, group activities or creative low-angle footage. The camera itself is waterproof to a depth of five metres without requiring an additional housing, while raised protective edges around its lens and a secure mechanical locking system are intended to keep it protected and firmly docked during demanding activities. The complete camera specifications and recording modes are detailed on RugOne’s product page.

A serious flagship platform beneath the rugged exterior
The detachable camera may be the headline feature, but the Xsnap 7 Pro is not simply an action-camera accessory built around basic smartphone hardware. At its core is the MediaTek Dimensity 8400, a modern 5G chipset paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X memory and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage, a configuration designed to provide the performance required for demanding applications, gaming, multitasking, video management and on-device AI processing.

Its 6.67-inch AMOLED display offers a sharp 1220 × 2712 resolution, a fluid 120Hz refresh rate and up to 1,700 nits of peak brightness, making it well suited to outdoor viewing and particularly useful when the phone is being used as a remote monitor for the detachable camera. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus provides additional protection, while an in-display fingerprint reader preserves the convenience and clean appearance normally associated with mainstream flagship phones.

The Xsnap 7 Pro arrives with RugOne OS based on Android 16, without advertising integrated into the operating system, and RugOne promises major software upgrades through Android 20 together with regular security updates. Google Gemini integration is accompanied by a collection of AI-assisted functions covering screen search, writing, translation, mathematical recognition and call summaries, while compatibility with services such as ChatGPT and Grok places the handset within a broader mobile AI ecosystem.

Three cameras for very different situations
When the detachable module is docked, the Xsnap 7 Pro still provides a separate 50MP main camera based on the Samsung GN9 sensor, complete with optical and electronic image stabilization and support for 4K recording at up to 60 frames per second. This remains the practical everyday camera for conventional photography and video, while the modular unit handles wide-angle action footage and unusual mounting positions.

The third rear imaging component is a dedicated 64MP infrared night-vision camera, supported by IR illumination for capturing subjects in total darkness without relying on a conventional visible flash. This could be genuinely useful during overnight camping, wildlife observation, building inspections, security work or emergency situations, giving the Xsnap 7 Pro an imaging capability that remains uncommon outside specialist rugged devices. A 32MP front-facing camera completes the system for selfies, video communication and 2K front-camera recording.

Built for water, drops and long periods away from a charger
The substantial exterior of the Xsnap 7 Pro is backed by IP68 and IP69K protection, allowing the phone to withstand dust, immersion in up to two metres of water for as long as 30 minutes, and exposure to high-pressure water jets under controlled test conditions. MIL-STD-810H certification and a stated resistance to drops from 1.5 metres onto concrete reinforce its positioning as a tool for difficult environments, while the Sand Dune and Black finishes provide two distinct interpretations of its industrial, adventure-focused design.

At 19.1mm thick and 477g, this is clearly not a phone created for buyers seeking the lightest device possible, but its size accommodates something few conventional handsets can offer: a 9,300mAh battery capable of powering the smartphone, repeatedly recharging the action camera and supplying other compatible devices through up to 10W reverse wireless charging. The phone also supports 45W wired charging and unusually fast 50W wireless charging, adding welcome flexibility to such a large-capacity power system.

Connectivity is equally comprehensive, with dual physical Nano-SIM support, integrated eSIM, extensive global 5G band coverage, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity across the 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz bands, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC with Google Pay support and multi-system satellite positioning. Two customizable shortcut buttons further strengthen the phone’s outdoor credentials by providing rapid access to frequently used tools or camera functions.

A convincing new direction for rugged smartphones
The RugOne Xsnap 7 Pro stands out because its modular camera is not merely a visual gimmick added to another oversized outdoor phone. The detachable module has its own battery, internal storage, stabilization system, waterproof body and recording modes, while the smartphone provides the processing power, large display, wireless controls, expanded storage and enormous energy reserve needed to support it over a much longer adventure.

Its 2.7K recording ceiling means the tiny module is not designed to replace every premium 4K action camera, and the considerable size and weight of the phone will not suit everyone, but the value of the Xsnap 7 Pro lies in integration rather than specification-sheet competition. It brings together a capable 5G smartphone, a wearable action camera, infrared night vision, serious durability and exceptionally long battery life in one unified system, reducing the number of separate devices that outdoor users need to pack, protect, charge and manage.

Following its award-winning appearance at IFA Berlin 2026, the RugOne Xsnap 7 Pro is now being introduced through a Kickstarter campaign, with reward availability and promotional pricing depending on the selected campaign tier. For creators and explorers who have always wanted a camera capable of leaving the phone while remaining connected to it, the Xsnap 7 Pro represents one of the most original rugged smartphone concepts of the year.
