Nubia Red Magic 3: a smartphone like a PC

With its Red Magic 3, Nubia offers a gaming smartphone to a whole new level, including a built-in fan and performance more than tempting.

The next Nubia gaming smartphone promises to be more than impressive. To talk about him, he relies on its integrated fan, promising a complete cooling of the device.

A monstrous technical Data
The video game-oriented mobile has a really interesting data sheet. It is powered by a Snapdragon 855 processor coupled with 12 GB RAM (maximum): enough to display extremely qualitative performance during your gaming sessions. 256 GB of storage are also available for more comfort. And to enjoy long games, it’s a battery of 5000 mAh that is present in the phone with the fast charge at 27 W. At the screen level, you can count on a 2.65-inch Amoled slab of Full HD + definition (2,340 x 1,080 px) with a refresh rate of 90 Hz, as well as HDR10 compatibility. Note that the image will not fill the entire front surface of the mobile, space has been kept up and down to house a photographic sensor, but also large (and thin) speakers.

Finally, it may be a very good photophone since it embeds a sensor Sony IMX586 48 Mpx (using the pixel binning technique) that can already be found in the Xiaomi Mi9 and Mi9 SE declination, or the Honor View 20. The lens opens at f / 1.7 and is wide-angle (80.32 °). At the front, it is a sensor of 16 Mpx is proposed. For the video part, it will be able to film until 8K and Nubia specifies that it will be possible to take slow motion at 1,920 fps, all in HD quality. A module that also sports the shape of the Superman logo, surely not a coincidence in view of (super) features displayed. For the rest, know that it includes a 3.5 mm mini-jack with DTS: X compatibility for surround sound. And for more immersion, a motor triggering vibrations – as on a controller – is inside. Finally, with its IP55 standard, it is protected against water jets and resistant to dust.

Fan and liquid cooling system
With its ROG Phone, Asus has pushed forward the segment of smartphones for mobile gaming, including its accessories, for example the external fan whose goal is to cool the mobile in extended sessions. Nubia is a little stronger on this Red Magic 3 by directly integrating the fan inside. This aerator is able to perform 14,000 rpm while remaining silent. A speed capable of lowering the temperature of the processor from 4 to 5 ° C. The fan is coupled with a liquid cooling system, without the builder venting on the subject.

Design & Display
The design doesn’t change much and the Red Magic 3 will look quite similar to its predecessor, Nubia Red Magic Mars. But it will get bigger – or: the Red Magic 3 will bring the user even deeper into the game. Instead of a 6 inch display, this now measures a stately 6.65 inch. Accordingly, the dimensions also increase to 171.7 x 78.5 x 9.65 mm at 215g. With the predecessor it was 158.2 x 75 x 9.9mm at 193g. It is available in four colors, whereby at the beginning only two are listed. The standard colour, black with black / anthracite back, is available with 6 or 8GB. The red back is only available in combination with 8+128GB memory. Special are the two Special Editions. Camouflage already existed with the predecessor and that makes a lot. New, and due to the current trend, is Twilight with a color gradient from purple to red. Both color variants are only available in combination with 12+256GB memory and they will cost accordingly more.

With the integrated fan, the Nubia Red Magic 3 is the first among gaming smartphones. For the Asus ROG Gaming Smartphone and Xiaomi Blackshark 2, there are only attachments in the form of a gamepad that attach a fan externally. Nubia expects a 500% better cooling performance than with a normal heatpipe.

Apart from that, the Nubia Red Magic remains somewhat unobtrusive optically. Typical for Nubia and “Red”-Magic are a few accents in red, as well as an RGB light strip on the back. This can be used for atmospheric lighting during gaming, but also as a notification LED. Under the hood there are 4 vibration motors in all four corners for “4D” feedback. There is much more to the frame than usual:
▪ Left: Slider at the top for Game Mode, SIM slot, 7 pins in the middle for the docking station
▪ Right: two sensitive shoulder buttons as buttons when gambling (can also be configured with the fingerprint sensor), fan grille, volume rocker and power button
▪ Downstairs: USB-C port, hole for speaker and microphone
▪ Top: 3,5mm jack socket

The absence of a notch and a borderless display makes sense with the gaming smartphone: the space above and below the display is used for loudspeakers facing the player. The Redmagic 3 is also easier to hold, with two recessed grips on the back. The new display has it all: it measures a proud 6.65 inches in the diagonal, has a 19.5:9 format, is equipped with an AMOLED panel and the picture is particularly fluid thanks to the 90 Hz repetition rate. Maybe this is also a similar panel to the new OnePlus 7 Pro. It will resolve with 2340 x 1080 pixels, which is enough for 387 PPI, but also does not unnecessarily burden the hardware. You can argue about the size, but those who already use a gaming smartphone are looking for entertainment and are happy about the larger and smoother display.

Nubia Red Magic 3 Features
And the next manufacturer follows suit, the Nubia Red Magic 3 comes with 48MP sensor. The Sony IMX586 – f/1.7 – works alone in the gaming smartphone, though. Here, too, the camera software works with pixel binning, so you can shoot 12MP. Surprise with the videos: apparently 8K videos should be possible. The front camera shoots Selfies with 16MP.

As far as connectivity is concerned, you don’t have to worry about the China version either, because LTE B20 is also included here: 1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/18/19/20/26. You can also buy a docking station that supplies the phone with power via USB-C and an Ethernet port – everything for the ping!

The 5000mAh battery is relatively large. This should also bring the Red Magic 3 safely through the day, including excessive gaming. The smartphone is charged via USB-C with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ or via Power Delivery – both with up to 27 watts.
