Showcasing a More Open HarmonyOS Ecosystem

The HUAWEI DEVELOPER CONFERENCE 2022 (Together) kicked off at Songshan Lake in Dongguan, showcasing the enhanced HarmonyOS ecosystem and highlighting key milestones from the past year. During the keynote speeches to open the event, Huawei executives unveiled groundbreaking technologies for the following domains: distributed capabilities, atomic services, AI, maps, audio & video, and privacy & security. The company also provided attendees a glimpse at innovative user experiences across five scenarios (i.e. Smart Home, Smart Office, Entertainment, Easy Travel, and Fitness & Health), as well as overviews for a set of brand-new open capabilities.

Richard Yu, Huawei’s Executive Director, CEO of the Consumer BG, and CEO of the Intelligent Automotive Solution BU, said: “Over the past four years, Huawei has overcome major challenges, thanks to the support of our partners and customers. With its increasingly adaptive base, the HarmonyOS ecosystem is becoming more inclusive, open, and innovative. Huawei looks forward to bringing global developers into the spotlight and building a Harmony World with all.”

HarmonyOS Ecosystem: Taking Another Longer Stride, for a Harmony World
Since its debut four years ago, HarmonyOS has made great strides, serving as the cornerstone for an all-connected future. HarmonyOS was released in 2019, and the following year, Huawei unveiled the HarmonyOS Connect platform for the company’s smart hardware ecosystem partners. By 2021, HarmonyOS had been installed on many smartphones and other smart devices, setting HarmonyOS on its path as the world’s fastest-growing mobile device operating system. This year, as Huawei has advanced its five scenario strategy to enhance user experiences, HarmonyOS has also cemented itself as the foundation for a flourishing ecosystem. The number of Huawei devices that come equipped with HarmonyOS has soared to 320 million.

Over the past four years, Huawei has worked painstakingly to make the HarmonyOS ecosystem better and more accessible, and shared the fruits of its labors with its developer partners, who have ridden the HarmonyOS fast lane full speed ahead. To date, the number of HarmonyOS Connect partners has reached over 2200, and HarmonyOS Connect device shipments have exceeded 250 million. The HarmonyOS ecosystem has also attracted more than two million developers, and provided 50,000 HarmonyOS atomic services. HMS Core has opened up 25,030 APIs and helped nearly 40,000 apps go global.

Huawei has relentlessly invested in cultivating talent for its HarmonyOS ecosystem. The company has worked with 166 universities and colleges in China, including Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions, to run HarmonyOS courses, providing a wealth of learning resources to over 20,000 student developers. Through its school-enterprise partnership programs, China’s Ministry of Education has supported 95 HarmonyOS ecosystem projects. Leveraging its cutting-edge technologies and over 30,000 APIs, Huawei is making progress towards building a Harmony World, based around the five scenarios mentioned above. The new ecosystem is expected to be even more inclusive and open, and greener, as it works to connect all things and all people.

HarmonyOS is also an advocate of providing accessibility services, such as sign language services, for the visually and hearing impaired, and the elderly, to make the gains of digital technology accessible and beneficial to all.

Innovative Huawei Open Capabilities: Taking Developers into a Digital Golden Age
The premium experiences created by HarmonyOS rely on the innovative technologies and capability openness across domains, including distributed capabilities, atomic services, AI, maps, audio & video, and privacy & security. Over the past four years, Huawei has worked tirelessly to innovate underlying technologies and offer abundant products and services, as well as open its capabilities and tools to developers.

Distributed capabilities lie at the core of HarmonyOS, an operating system that aims to build a fully-connected world. They are also critical to Super Device, shared multi-device communications, super home screen, and many more extraordinary functions. The DSoftBus, device-cloud synergy, and other capabilities allow HarmonyOS devices to be connected for easy use, and literally in the blink of eye. These devices deliver game-changing experiences thanks to features such as content syncing between devices, next-level MeeTime voice calling, and video sharing. Content on smartphones can be seamlessly transferred to watches or large-screen devices, and users can view and manage apps running on different devices from a single screen. Functions, like multi-cam, Color Capture, and cross-device WPS content editing allow for efficient content transfer and creation. Not only that, innovative experiences brought by features such as shared multi-device communications, super home screen, and SuperHub streamline office work.

Lightweight services are an important part of the HarmonyOS ecosystem. The innovative atomic services provided by HarmonyOS deliver proactive services and system-level and cross-device experiences to users through numerous access points. These services support a range of service widgets, and are installation-free, making them easy to use and share. What’s more, they share the same code with apps and therefore do not require any redundant development, which streamlines the app development process. With over 30 touchpoints, including Assistant·TODAY, home screen, Celia Suggestions, AI Voice, and AI Search, the HarmonyOS ecosystem is able to power partners, including Sina, Alipay, and Qunar, to distribute services to a vast user base, whether it’s on smartphones, watches, cockpits, or other devices.
Cutting-edge HarmonyOS AI has helped apps, such as Petal Clip, HUAWEI Books, and AI Voice, deliver an even better experience, opening up more knowledge and services than ever. The newly released WebBrain is the first-ever authoritative, multilingual knowledge retrieval and generation model, streamlining reading and searches.

Huawei also launched 3D real-scene mapping, which can use 2500 photos to render an area of up to 5 km2 in just 30 minutes, with a meticulous level of detail. The conference attendees were impressed by the stunning true-to-life 3D map of the Xiliubeipo Village displayed through Petal Ride. This next-level mapping improves navigation precision and provides pinpoint real-time map rendering on the cloud, for an even wider view.

In face of the widespread use of ultra-HD audio and video, the HDR Vivid and Audio Vivid technologies have been adopted by a number of HarmonyOS devices to bring ultimate audiovisual experiences to users. HDR Vivid enhances the image quality of videos across the board, and is supported on a vast array of Huawei devices, including Pocket S, HUAWEI Vision V, V Pro, and V75 Super. By adopting this technology, HUAWEI Mate 50 smartphone users are able to generate lifelike videos with remarkable ease. Audio Vivid is the first-ever AI-based audio codec certification standard, and Huawei has participated in formulating this standard. By integrating Huawei exclusive device-side audio rendering algorithm, certified devices are able to deliver full-link HD sound effects. Huawei also plans to equip cockpits with HD spatial audio. The company has opened up the Petal Vivid plugin for content creators to make full-link HD, spatial audio that will further immerse audiences.

To protect user privacy, HarmonyOS is also committed to building a comprehensive security architecture at the chip, system, and ecosystem levels to provide users with security. Thanks to a distributed security framework, HarmonyOS is able to provide users with unique safeguards across a wide range of devices, including smart locks, MemoSpace, smart wearables, and smart cockpits. Huawei has driven the development of a comprehensive device security ecosystem for multiple industries, and opened up security and privacy capabilities to its partners. On top of this, Huawei has implemented end-to-end security management for HarmonyOS apps in their development, release, and running phases, to protect developers’ apps from tampering or spoofing, and give consumers a peace of mind.

Since the launch of HarmonyOS, Huawei has pursued groundbreaking technological innovation and capability openness, and forged key industry partnerships. These new technologies have provided consumers with enriching experiences, and allowed developers to reach their full potential. Huawei will continue opening up core technologies and capabilities, and work with developers and ecosystem partners to bolster the HarmonyOS ecosystem and create seamless AI life experiences across all five scenarios for a fully-connected future.
