SmallRig Launches New Modular Cage Kit for Sony FX5
SmallRig has introduced its new Modular Cage Kit for the Sony FX5, giving filmmakers a flexible foundation that can evolve from a lightweight handheld setup into a fully equipped cinema rig. The new system combines strong camera protection, multiple mounting options and fast-release hardware, while its modular construction allows creators to install only the components required for each production. Designed around the idea “Rig for Cinema, Build for You,” the cage secures the Sony FX5 through a multi-point locking system. This helps prevent twisting or unwanted movement when the camera is carrying heavier accessories, making the setup suitable for handheld filming, studio productions, documentary work and more complex cinema builds.
A detachable HawkLock NATO rail is one of the system’s most practical features. It can be used together with the full cage or separately when a smaller configuration is preferred. Removing the upper components also leaves the FX5 hot shoe accessible for compatible Sony accessories, including the ECM-B1M, ECM-M1 and ECM-B10 microphones. The cage can additionally accommodate Sony’s XLR-H2B handle and the DVFEL1B viewfinder when no top-mounted accessories are installed.
SmallRig has equipped the cage with a wide selection of mounting interfaces, including 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threaded holes, ARRI locating holes, a cold-shoe mount, QD socket and lanyard attachment point. HawkLock H21 NATO and H38 Arca-Swiss quick-release interfaces make it easier to move the camera between handheld, tripod and other support configurations. Anti-slip elements on both the NATO rail and Arca-Swiss plate help keep the rig firmly locked during demanding shots.
Creators can configure the system for several different workflows. Available builds include an Essential Handheld Kit for more mobile shooting, a Pro Handheld Kit with additional handling options, a Handheld V-Mount Kit for longer recording sessions, an Advanced Rod Support Kit for cinema accessories and a dedicated extension solution for Sony’s XLR hardware. This modular approach means users can begin with a compact cage and add power, monitoring, audio, rod support or other accessories as their production demands grow.
The new FX5 collection is also launching with discounts of up to 14%. The SmallRig HawkLock Pro Advanced Cage Kit for Sony FX5, combining the cage, handheld setup and advanced dual-rod system, starts at €107.90, reduced from €125.90. The HawkLock Cage Kit with the cage, XLR handle kit, D-style top handle and V-Mount plate starts at €80.90, down from €94.90.
Individual expansion accessories are discounted as well. The Extension Mount Plate Kit for Sony XLR-H2 is available for €40.90 instead of €47.90, while the Mount Plate for Sony XLR-H2/H1 is priced at €31.90, reduced from €36.90. Prices and availability may vary by configuration and region.
