Tech Tips For Working at Home More Effectively

Unless you‘ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you‘ll probably be aware that there‘s been a massive increase in the number of people working from home. People often have visions of ultra-productive work days from the comfort of their own home, but the reality is often a frustrating day of distractions and a less-than-optimal computer setup.

Working at Home

While AUKEY is unable to do much about the distractions and temptations of a working day at home, we can help out with turning your basic home setup into something altogether more office-worthy.

Boost Your Productivity (and Comfort) with a Second Display
It‘s all very well bringing the clunky work laptop home, but there‘s a limit to how efficient you can be when peering at its tiny screen. Regardless of the specific work being done, it‘s always best to have plenty of screen real-estate to spread out across, and better still to have more than one screen. You can have a Skype conference call open on the laptop screen, while referring to charts and data on your large additional monitor. You‘ll certainly look and feel a lot more slick and professional, and productivity is guaranteed to go up.

It‘s also less straining on the eyes to have a nice big screen to look at, instead of having to lean forward to make out details on a little laptop screen. If you‘re going to be stuck in the house all day, you may as well be comfortable.

The best way to add a second display to your laptop is with a USB-C hub. This allows you to connect a second display (or sometimes even a third display on some models), while at the same time vastly expanding the number of available ports. AUKEY has recently released the Unity Link PD III model, which turns one port into eight and allows you to connect an HDMI monitor.

And if you want to keep your setup as lean as possible and don‘t need the additional functionality a hub brings, a simple USB-C to HDMI adapter such as AUKEY‘s CB-A29 will get the job done.

And don‘t forget a high-quality HDMI cable. To enjoy 4K resolution at a super-smooth 60Hz it will need to support at least HDMI 2.0, like our CB-H01 cable does.

Charge Better and Leave Behind the Tangle of Wires
Another way to improve your setup is to reduce the clutter of plugs and cables. One simple way to achieve this is to have a single charger that can charge all your gear—from laptop, to tablet, to phone. Such a charger can also charge your Nintendo Switch while you work, readying it for a post-work Animal Crossing session.

Our latest Omnia Duo 65W is the perfect example of a clutter-reducing charger. With a total of 65W available, it can charge large and powerful laptops like the MacBook Pro 13″, and with two fast-charging USB-C ports you can charge your phone at the same time (an iPhone can be charged up to 18W, way faster than the standard 5W).

What makes the Omnia series of chargers different from the competition is their extremely compact and lightweight nature. This is due to the use of our newly-developed OmniaChip, which makes use of gallium nitride (GaN) instead of silicon. There‘s no need to take up space with a massive power brick, this laptop charger is no bigger than most standard phone chargers.

Replacing your messy collection of adapters with a single charger that‘s small, powerful, and versatile is certainly a smart choice for remote workers trying to turn their cluttered living room into an effective workspace.

If you do decide to add a USB PD charger to your home office setup, it‘s important to ensure you have a quality cable that‘s up to the task. Our Impulse Braided USB-C to C cable is ideal for this kind of usage. It supports USB Power Delivery for all the power your MacBook Pro 13″ requires, and with a nylon braided jacket and aramid fiber core, it is also extremely durable. 2m (6.6ft) gives you plenty of room to play with when trying to set yourself up in a space that wasn‘t originally conceived with office work in mind.

Of course, regardless of how efficient you are at working from home, by far the most important thing is that everybody stays safe during these difficult times. Hopefully it won‘t be too long before we can all return to our regular places of work and don‘t have to consider the challenges of working from home.
