UMIDIGI A9, the newest addition to the company’s A-series, will go on global sale at $99.99 for the first time today. The A9 features the latest Android 11, infrared temperature measurement, and a 5150mAh battery. In this price range, one of the biggest challengers seems to be Xiaomi Redmi 9A.

I’m never bothered to know which new device is launching because I always sort of know the Redmi A-series will top my $100 smartphone list. But for the first time, with the announcement of the UMIDIGI A9, I’ve felt like there’s finally a worthy competitor – something I could tell people to consider over the Redmi 9A.

With a retail price of $100, the UMIDIGI A9 brings great competition to the Redmi 9A.

Both UMIDIGI A9 and Redmi 9A have the same 6.53’’ big display with the same HD+ resolution and same 20:9 aspect ratio. They also have a similar 5000mAh battery, with the UMIDIGI A9 having just 150mAh more. They both support 10W charging.

Speaking of cameras, they have the same main 13MP rear sensor. But here, the UMIDIGI A9 features an extra 8MP ultra wide camera and 2MP camera for depth information. Moreover, the UMIDIGI A9 has an infrared temperature sensor to take body temperature, which is very useful in this period. On the front, UMIDIGI A9 comes with an 8MP selfie camera while the Redmi 9A house the 5MP one.

In terms of performance, both phones feature the Helio G25 processor. But the UMIDIGI A9 outsmarts the Redmi 9A with 3GB + 64GB compared to the latter’s 2GB + 32GB.

The UMIDIGI A9 comes with the latest stock Android 11 while the Redmi 9A runs MIUI 12 based on Android 10. The UMIDIGI A9 sports fingerprint unlock and a dedicated button for convenient and safe use but the Redmi 9A doesn’t support them. Type C port is already available on UMIDIGI A9 but the Redmi 9A still sticks with Micro USB. Besides, for global availability, UMIDIGI A9 supports global bands.
