Meet SmallRig Video Tripod in Carabiner Shape
In the world of action cameras and compact rigs, truly original accessories are rare. Many products promise versatility but ultimately deliver incremental variations on familiar mini-tripod or selfie-stick designs. The SmallRig VT-07 Video Tripod in Carabiner Shape takes a different approach. Rather than competing on height or payload alone, it rethinks how a tripod can be carried, deployed, and used in unconventional environments. After extended hands-on use, it becomes clear that this is not a novelty accessory, but a carefully engineered tool for creators who shoot on the move.
The unboxing experience is clean, minimal, and professional, very much in line with SmallRig’s established presentation standards. Inside the compact retail box, the VT-07 is neatly secured, immediately drawing attention to its unusual carabiner-inspired silhouette. Alongside the tripod itself, SmallRig includes a straightforward user manual that clearly illustrates deployment modes and safety considerations for suspended shooting. There is no unnecessary filler here. The packaging communicates confidence in the product’s design, suggesting that the tripod itself is meant to be the focus rather than a long list of accessories.
At first contact, the VT-07 feels reassuringly solid for its size and weight. At just 141 g (5 oz), it strikes an excellent balance between portability and perceived durability. The body is constructed from a thoughtful combination of aluminum alloy, GF nylon, and silicone, resulting in a structure that feels rigid where it needs to be, yet comfortable in hand during prolonged handheld use. The defining feature is, of course, the openable carabiner design. Unlike decorative or fixed loops seen on other compact tripods, this is a functional, load-bearing component that genuinely changes how the accessory is used. When clipped to a backpack strap or belt loop, the VT-07 remains instantly accessible, eliminating the need to dig through a bag during fast-moving shoots. Grip ergonomics are equally well considered. In handheld mode, the silicone-textured surfaces provide a secure, non-slip feel, even when shooting for extended periods or in warmer conditions.
The VT-07 supports handheld, desktop, and suspended (hook) shooting within a single compact system. Transitioning between these modes is fast and intuitive, requiring no additional tools or disassembly. This fluid adaptability makes it particularly effective for creators who need to react quickly to changing environments.
The integrated mantis hook is the most distinctive and, in practice, the most valuable feature. It allows the tripod to be securely suspended from fences, railings, basketball courts, doors, and similar structures. During testing, this proved invaluable for capturing stable, elevated, or downward-facing angles in spaces where traditional tripods simply cannot be deployed. For urban exploration, sports environments, or travel content, this capability opens up creative perspectives that would otherwise require clamps or improvised mounts.
The four-section telescoping mechanism extends smoothly and locks confidently at each stage. Depending on configuration, the extension range covers approximately 6.4 inches to 13.6 inches, offering meaningful flexibility for framing without compromising rigidity. Despite its compact nature, the pole remains impressively stable, even when fully extended with an action camera mounted.
The integrated 2-prong action camera adapter supports 180-degree angle adjustment, enabling precise framing whether the camera is handheld, placed on a desk, or suspended upside down. Adjustment resistance is well tuned—firm enough to hold position securely, yet smooth enough for quick changes.
The VT-07 offers broad compatibility with popular action cameras, including GoPro models, Insta360 Ace/Ace Pro, and DJI Osmo Action devices. This makes it a versatile choice for creators operating across multiple camera ecosystems, without the need for brand-specific accessories.
After extended real-world use, the VT-07 continues to impress with its durability and practicality. The telescoping sections maintain consistent tension, the carabiner hinge shows no looseness, and the hook remains reliable even after repeated mounting and removal. Importantly, the lightweight design reduces fatigue during long handheld sessions, making it well suited for travel days, vlogging walks, and event coverage. What stands out most over time is how often this tripod replaces larger setups. Its ability to solve unexpected shooting challenges—tight spaces, elevated angles, quick setup requirements—means it frequently becomes the first accessory reached for rather than a backup option.
The SmallRig VT-07 Video Tripod in Carabiner Shape is a thoughtfully engineered solution for creators who value adaptability, speed, and creative freedom. Its innovative carabiner design and integrated mantis hook go beyond visual differentiation, delivering genuine functional advantages in real-world shooting scenarios. For travel vloggers, action camera users, and content creators who regularly work in dynamic or constrained environments, this tripod offers a level of versatility that traditional mini tripods simply cannot match. Compact, lightweight, and intelligently designed, the VT-07 earns its place as a highly practical everyday carry accessory for modern content creation.

– Travel vlogging on the move. Clipped to a backpack strap, the VT-07 is instantly accessible for quick walk-and-talk shots without stopping to unpack gear.
– Urban exploration and street content. The mantis hook allows you to suspend the camera from railings, fences, or scaffolding to capture elevated or top-down city perspectives that standard tripods can’t reach.
– Sports courts and playground filming. Hung securely on basketball hoops, court fences, or goal nets, it enables stable wide shots or time-lapse recordings during practice or casual games.
– POV hiking and outdoor adventures. Lightweight and fatigue-free in handheld mode, it works well for trail walks, mountain paths, or forest exploration, especially when paired with an action camera.
– Public transport and travel hubs. In crowded stations or airports where tripods are impractical or restricted, the VT-07 can be handheld or discreetly hooked to fixed structures for steady framing.
– Café, hotel, and desk-based content. Deployed in desktop mode, it’s ideal for quick lifestyle shots, laptop B-roll, or casual sit-down vlogs while traveling.
– Creative overhead and downward angles. Suspended shooting enables top-down views for unboxings, packing shots, or food and drink content without needing a dedicated overhead rig.
– Event coverage in tight spaces. During small events, exhibitions, or meetups, it can be clipped to barriers or railings to capture stable angles without obstructing foot traffic.
– Car interior and road-trip filming. Hung from headrest bars or cargo hooks (where safe and legal), it allows stable interior shots without bulky suction mounts.
– Action camera time-lapse setups. Quickly hook it to fences, balconies, or gates to record sunsets, crowd movement, or city traffic without carrying full-size support gear.
– Family and personal memory capture. Perfect for vacations, parks, or playgrounds when you want hands-free group shots without asking strangers for help.
– Backup tripod for unpredictable situations. When a main tripod is too large, too slow to deploy, or simply not allowed, the VT-07 often becomes the fastest and most practical solution.
