Xiaomi announces two new routers: Xiaomi Mi Router 4A and 4A Gigabit Edition
Xiaomi announces two new routers with WiFi Dual Band: Xiaomi Mi Router 4A and 4A Gigabit Edition.
It is not the first time that we are talking about proposals from Xiaomi that are not phones: the Air Dots Pro headphones and the wireless charger with Yeelight Wireless Charging Night Lamp are just some examples. And it is that the Chinese company, which at the end of 2018 signed an agreement with IKEA, obtains a large part of its income precisely from its IoT family and lifestyle products. The latest to join its wide range of solutions are two routers that operate in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands: the Xiaomi Mi Router 4A and the Xiaomi Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition. The latter, moreover, as its name suggests, boasts LAN speeds of up to 1 Gbps and supports the simultaneous connection of up to 128 devices and devices.
The cheaper model features a MT7628DA chip (also found on the Xiaomi Router 4C), 64MB of RAM, 16MB of ROM and provides 100Mbps WAN connection and two 100Mbps LAN ports and is recommended for those with a connection below 100 Mbps and that use 64 or fewer devices in the same environment. The most expensive version, called Xiaomi Router 4A Gigabit, features 880 MHz dual-core processor, 128 MB ram and Gigabit connection on both WAN and LAN ports, and is suitable for users with up to 100 Mbps connectivity with support for up to 128 devices connected at the same time. Both models bring features such as IPv6, child locks, remote management app, and network notifications.
Four omnidirectional antennas
Xiaomi has announced in China the new Xiaomi Mi Router 4A, an improved version of the Mi Router 3C (launched a couple of years ago) that integrates WiFi Dual Band, so it operates both in the 2.4GHz (300Mbps) band and in the 5GHz band (867Mbps). In addition, it has four omnidirectional antennas, allows to connect up to 64 devices simultaneously and has IPV6 support, which will be available through an update in June. The Gigabit Edition model, on the other hand, shares the same features as the Xiaomi Mi Router 4A (including IPV6 support), but boasts of achieving 1Gbps LAN speeds thanks to a faster processor. It also comes with more RAM, offers the possibility of connecting up to 128 devices simultaneously and guarantees a better heat dissipation through its aluminum base with several holes.
These are its most important technical characteristics:
300Mbps 802.11n / 867Mbps 802.11ac WiFi 2.4GHz and 5GHz
Protocol: IEEE 802.11a / b / g / n / ac, IEEE 802.3 / 3u (My Router 4A); IEEE 802.11a / b / g / n / ac, IEEE 802.3 / 3u / 3ab (Xiaomi Mi Router 4A Gigabit Edition)
MediaTek MT7628DA / 880MHz MT7621A MIPS Dual Core (Gigabit Edition)
RAM: 64MB DDR3 / 128MB DDR3 (Gigabit Edition)
16MB ROM
Four external omnidirectional antennas: maximum gain of 2.4GHz 5dBi x 2, maximum gain of 5GHz 6dBi x 2
Up to 64 connected devices (up to 128 in the Gigabit Edition model)
Real-time monitoring and parental controls with the Mi WiFi application on Android and iOS
Dimensions: 188×100,5×175 mm (Xiaomi Mi Router 4A); 201x122x174 mm (Gigabit Edition)
Two LAN ports 10 / 100Mbps / 1000Mbps in Gigabit Edition (Auto MDI / MDIX)
One WAN RJ45 port 10 / 100Mbps / 1000Mbps in Gigabit Edition (Auto MDI / MDIX)
A power socket and two LED indicators
Xiaomi Mi Router 4A: 15.7 euros for a very powerful router
The new Mi Router 4A can operate in the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, through which it can transmit up to 1,167 Mbps. It has an error correction algorithm to have a more stable data transmission. It also has 4 high gain antennas. Xiaomi today launched two models: one with 100M Ethernet, and another with Gigabit Ethernet. At the software level, it is compatible with the MiWiFi app, in addition to offering firmware updates through OTA (the system is based on OpenWRT). Some new features will arrive to the MiWiFi app next May, such as not having to enter the Wi-Fi password with each smart device we connect to the home.
IPv6 support will also be added through the app, and currently the connected devices can be managed, blocking access to websites, limiting the Internet speed and the bandwidth that each device can access, or limiting the access time for children. The app shows notifications on the mobile every time a new device is connected to the network. The memory of the router is 64 MB, and allows to connect up to 64 devices between WiFi and LAN, being compatible with MIMO and 256QAM. In the 5 GHz band only operates on channels 36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161 and 165, coinciding only the first 4 with those used in Europe and we already detailed in the comparison of 2 , 4 GHz vs 5 GHz.
Thus, Xiaomi establishes in five routers the new range depending on the broadband available, as well as the range of its WiFi (the Mesh is lower because it is intended to be used with two or more repeaters):
Xiaomi Mi Router 4C: up to 100 Mbps, 90 m2 and 32 devices
Xiaomi Mi Router 4A: up to 100 Mbps, 120 m2 and 32 devices
Xiaomi Mi Router 4A Gigabit: more than 100 Mbps, 120 m2 and 64 devices
Xiaomi Mi Router Pro: more than 100 Mbps, 150 m2 and 128 devices
Xiaomi Mi WiFi Mesh: more than 100 Mbps, 120 m2 and 248 devices
Price and availability
Both teams will be available in white and will go on sale from March 19. The Xiaomi Mi Router 4A is priced at 119 yuan, while the 4A Gigabit Edition model costs 169 yuan, which at the change is about 16 and 23 euros respectively. At the moment, they will be marketed only in China, we do not know if Xiaomi will finally decide to take them to the international market.
