Before we get into the nitty gritty about what upgrades the new Mijia 1S smart vacuum cleaner has received, let’s remember what has made the Original Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum a bestseller in the smart home appliance sector.
The Original Xiaomi Mijia smart robot vacuum was one of the company’s most popular home appliances. The smart vacuum’s key selling points were its modern design, accurate navigation and a very decent cleaning ability. The vacuum’s cleaning performance is based on a variety of factors, including:
● 12 sensors including a Laser Distance Sensor that lets the robot scan its surroundings at 360 degrees, 1800 times per second;
● Three dedicated processors to track the robot’s movements in real time;
● Nidec brushless DC motor for a low-noise performance;
● 5200 mAh battery enough for a 2.5-hour cleaning session of a 250sq.m property;
● App control: you can easily control the vacuum with the Mi Home app.
The Original Xiaomi Mijia smart vacuum is still a popular choice among those shopping for smart home appliances. However, since its bestselling smart vacuum, Xiaomi have released several new and improved models: the most recent ones include the Roborock T6 and the Xiaomi Mijia 1S.
What are the main upgrades?
The first upgrade on the new Xiaomi Mijia 1S vacuum cleaner is hiding in the smart vacuum’s mini tower: Xiaomi have significantly improved the robot’s laser distance sensor (LDS) and, subsequently, its navigation algorithms. The new improved laser is capable of scanning the vacuum’s surroundings much faster and allows it to create more accurate maps and better navigate the cleaning area. This, according to the company, has improved the robot’s cleaning efficiency by 13% compared to the first generation Original Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum.
Inside the Xiaomi Mijia 1S smart vacuum cleaner, there is a new 4-core processor that boosts the new vacuum’s performance by 40% — once again, this is based on Xiaomi’s own forecast.
Moreover, the 1S comes with increased suction power delivering 2,000 Pa compared to the 1,800 Pa on the Original Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum. This puts the S1 on the same level as the company’s another newly released vacuum cleaner — the Roborock T6. But name dropping aside, in real life, this translates into the robot performing better on harder-to-clean surfaces like carpets — and it does a better job of picking up stubborn debris, like pet hair. This is an important improvement as it will help keep your home free from dust and other allergy-causing elements, which is an important factor for a large number of home owners.
An interesting addition to the vacuum’s software functionality is AI Image Recognition. This is a very interesting feature that lets the smart vacuum recognize the rooms by differentiating between the doors leading to those rooms. How this will translate into everyday use, we are not exactly sure — but it’s definitely something we are eager to try out as it will bring significant improvements to the robot’s navigation capabilities.
Additionally (and just like the Roborock T6), the Xiaomi 1S supports the Xiaomi AI speaker. So, you will be able to control the robot with voice commands, which can be even more convenient than using the dedicated Mi Home App.
Design
On the surface, the two smart vacuums look very much alike. You get the same circular shape with a simple set of physical controls on the top: the home button and switch on/off button. Both devices are made in Xiaomi’s signature clean white color. Both vacuums come with a small tower on the top housing the main sensor and both are very compact and unobtrusive.
When it comes to design, we haven’t found that any important differences between the two robots — and this could be for the better as we have never had anything negative to say about Xiaomi smart vacuums’ aesthetics.
Which one should you get?
The Original Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is currently priced at just above $400. The new Xiaomi Mijia 1S, a bit surprisingly, less expensive — available for close to $300. The decrease in price could be a marketing ploy while the smart vacuum cleaner is still in its early launch stage.
Be that as it may, the Xiaomi Mijia 1S vacuum cleaner does come with several notable upgrades and is, in general, a more modern device compared to the Original Mi Robot. AI Image Recognition, voice control and improved navigation are definitely important improvements. To us, the Mijia 1S does seem like a very interesting gadget to try out and the one that has the potential to be an even better home cleaning helper than Xiaomi’s previous smart vacuum models.
