Workout or sweat-free journey to work, it’s your choice by dialing in the level of pedal assist using the handlebar control system. Without a doubt, there are plenty of benefits to riding an e-bike. But, in order to ride safely, use common sense and these tips:
1. Be Savvy
Check in with your local bike shop to learn how road e-bikes are regulated in your area and know whether you are considered a bicyclist or motorized vehicle. E-bikes and the laws pertaining to them can vary by country and region. In most areas, bicyclists should act like a motorist, stopping at traffic signals and stop sights, and riding with the flow of traffic. Before heading out on your e-bike, make sure you are comfortable operating it by practicing slowing, stopping, getting on and off, and maneuvering your e-bike.
2. Be Seen
Whether you are riding an e-bike or a regular bike, it is always a good idea to take extra precautions to be seen while on the road. Wearing bright and/or reflective clothing and using front and rear lights is a good place to start. The DYU Smart Bike L1 and DYU Smart Bike V1 both have integrated lights. In addition to accessories, it’s important to be alert while riding on the road. Use hand signals to communicate your intentions with surrounding traffic. Keep in mind, motorists may not be expecting a bicycle to be traveling at faster speeds.
3. Be Respectful
E-bikes can go faster than a regular bicycle, but when riding around cars, other bikes, and pedestrians be courteous and keep your speed in check and always follow the posted speed limit. When passing other bicyclists and pedestrians on the road, using a bell and let the person know you are passing in a friendly voice. As a faster-moving vehicle, if you choose to ride your e-bike on greenways and other multi-use paths, be respectful of all other users and know that in some areas, riding your e-bike on these types of surfaces may not be allowed. Finally, if you want to join a group ride, let your friends know you’ll be riding an e-bike and adjust the pace so everyone can keep up!
