SmallRig OrBrella FM 60B: Soft Light Ready in 15 Seconds
For creators who regularly move between studios, offices, interviews and temporary shooting locations, lighting can easily become one of the most cumbersome parts of the production kit, especially when a traditional COB light, stand, reflector and large softbox all need to be assembled before recording can even begin. SmallRig is approaching that problem from a very different direction with the new OrBrella FM 60B Foldable LED Video Light, a compact 2-in-1 lighting system developed in collaboration with CineD that combines a 60W LED source and large soft-light structure into one highly portable package.
The defining feature is its patented quick-deploy construction, which allows the OrBrella FM 60B to open and become ready for shooting in approximately 15 seconds. Instead of unpacking a separate modifier, mounting rods and attaching diffusion fabric, the entire structure unfolds much like an umbrella, making it particularly attractive for interviews, mobile content production, livestreaming, product photography and other situations where creators need professional lighting without spending several minutes building the setup.
Despite the compact concept, SmallRig has designed the OrBrella around genuinely soft illumination rather than simply increasing portability. A dual-layer bounce diffusion system is intended to spread the light across a broad surface and reduce the pronounced shadows normally associated with small direct LED sources, while a high-CRI coating is designed to maintain natural skin tones and accurate colors in front of the camera. Creators who want a harder, more directional appearance can also use the light head without the diffusion layers, gaining additional output and considerably more flexibility from the same fixture.
Color temperature can be adjusted continuously from 2700K to 6500K, covering everything from warm interior lighting to neutral studio setups and cool daylight conditions, making the FM 60B adaptable enough to become a primary key light, fill light or supplementary source depending on the scene. Control is available directly from the unit as well as remotely through SmallRig’s SMALLGOGO app, an especially useful option when the light has already been positioned away from the camera or mounted somewhere less convenient to reach.
Another interesting element of the design is the use of detachable LED panels that can be repositioned to influence the character of the illumination, allowing the system to move between a softer bounced appearance and a more concentrated lighting style without introducing another large accessory into the kit. It is this combination of modifier and light source that makes the OrBrella concept considerably more interesting than a conventional portable COB light paired with a compact softbox.
Portability remains one of its strongest arguments. When folded, the system measures only 34 cm / 13.4 inches and weighs approximately 1.3 kg / 2.87 lb, compact enough to fit far more comfortably into a creator’s equipment load than a traditional large soft-light arrangement. For videographers travelling between locations, small production teams or creators working from limited spaces, that reduction in setup volume could be just as valuable as the 15-second deployment time itself.
SmallRig is currently promoting the OrBrella FM 60B through an early-bird campaign, with the introductory offer shown at €158.90 instead of the regular €178.90 crowdfunding price, representing a €20 saving, with only 100 early-bird spots advertised. At that level, the FM 60B looks particularly compelling because it attempts to replace several pieces of conventional lighting equipment with one lightweight system that can be carried, opened and put to work almost immediately.
The SmallRig OrBrella FM 60B is ultimately built around a very practical idea: professional-looking soft light should not require a lengthy setup or a large collection of modifiers. By combining a 60W adjustable LED source, integrated diffusion, app control, flexible light characteristics and an umbrella-style structure that can be deployed in seconds, SmallRig has created a lighting tool that could be especially appealing to modern creators who value speed and mobility almost as much as image quality.
