MINISFORUM N5 Max AI NAS Is Here, Built for Bigger AI Workloads

The NAS is evolving. Storage is no longer the only reason to put a powerful server on your desk or in your home lab. With the new MINISFORUM N5 MAX AI NAS, MINISFORUM is combining massive hybrid storage, high-speed networking and serious local AI computing into a single platform designed for demanding workloads. At the heart of the N5 MAX is AMD’s Ryzen™ AI Max+ 395, featuring 16 cores and 32 threads, paired with Radeon™ 8060S graphics and up to 126 TOPS of AI performance. This is far beyond what you would normally expect from a conventional NAS, turning the N5 MAX into a powerful local AI workstation as well as a centralized storage platform.

A NAS Built Around Local AI
The biggest attraction of the MINISFORUM N5 MAX is its ability to bring serious AI workloads directly to your own hardware. The Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is based on AMD’s Strix Halo platform and combines CPU, GPU and AI acceleration in one high-performance package. With up to 128GB of LPDDR5X unified memory, the N5 MAX has the memory capacity and bandwidth needed for demanding local AI applications, including large language models, AI agents, coding workloads, image generation and other GPU-intensive tasks. The 128GB configuration is particularly interesting for AI enthusiasts. MINISFORUM says it provides enough headroom to run 120B-class open models locally, with examples including gpt-oss-120b and Qwen3.5-122B-A10B. The company’s published benchmark results show that these models can be used locally, although actual performance will vary depending on the model, quantization, context length and software configuration. Memory bandwidth is another important part of the equation. The N5 MAX uses LPDDR5X running at up to 8533MT/s on a 256-bit bus, helping keep the CPU and Radeon 8060S fed when multiple AI and data-intensive workloads are running simultaneously.

Up to 200TB of Hybrid Storage
Of course, this is still a NAS — and MINISFORUM has made sure the storage architecture matches the computing power. The N5 MAX provides five 3.5″/2.5″ SATA drive bays for high-capacity HDD storage, alongside five M.2 NVMe SSD slots. With suitable drives installed, the platform can reach up to 200TB of total storage capacity. This hybrid architecture makes a lot of sense for AI workloads. Large HDD arrays can handle archives, backups, media libraries and massive datasets, while NVMe SSDs can be dedicated to frequently accessed files, AI models, cache, project data and performance-sensitive workloads. The system also supports multiple RAID configurations, including RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5/RAIDZ1 and RAID 6/RAIDZ2, giving users flexibility when balancing capacity, performance and data protection.

Dual 10GbE and USB4 v2
A powerful NAS is only as useful as its ability to move data quickly, and the N5 MAX is equipped accordingly. There are two 10GbE Ethernet ports, providing the high network bandwidth needed for large file transfers, collaborative workflows and fast access to centralized storage. For even more expansion potential, the system includes two USB4 v2 ports supporting up to 80Gbps, opening the door to high-performance external storage and other demanding peripherals. There is also HDMI 2.1 FRL output supporting up to 8K at 60Hz, making the N5 MAX suitable for direct high-resolution display and monitoring applications as well.

MinisCloud OS Turns Hardware Into a Complete Platform
MINISFORUM is also positioning the N5 MAX as more than a box full of hardware. The pre-installed MinisCloud OS provides an integrated environment for storage, virtualization, Docker applications, remote access and AI-related functions. Built-in capabilities include ZFS snapshots, LZ4 compression, multi-user isolation, Docker apps, AI photo albums and one-click remote access. For users who like experimenting with self-hosted applications, the N5 MAX’s one-click Docker installation makes it easier to deploy additional services without turning the NAS into a complicated manual configuration project. The platform also incorporates MinisOpenClaw for local AI workflows, with features designed around AI assistants, semantic search and controlled access to local data. MINISFORUM states that the default MinisOpenClaw model is Qwen3.6-35B, while its demonstrations of 120B-class models are based on local benchmark testing rather than the default installation.

Designed for Creators, Developers and AI Enthusiasts
The real appeal of the N5 MAX is the way its different components complement one another. A photographer or video creator can store large media libraries on the HDD array while keeping active projects and cache on NVMe. Developers can run containers, virtual machines and local AI models from the same machine. AI enthusiasts can experiment with increasingly capable local models without having to send every request to a cloud service. For businesses and advanced home users, the combination of centralized storage, high-speed networking, virtualization, Docker and local AI creates a versatile private infrastructure platform rather than simply another NAS. MINISFORUM also includes a built-in 250W power supply, eliminating the need for a bulky external power brick. The system uses a multi-zone thermal design with heat pipes, PCM and dedicated fans to manage the CPU, storage and airflow during demanding workloads.

The N5 MAX Is Available Now
The MINISFORUM N5 MAX AI NAS is currently listed at $2,599, reduced from $3,249, for the 64GB LPDDR5X + 128GB OS-storage configuration. The 128GB version is listed at $3,599, reduced from $4,499, with the store currently showing an estimated mid-September shipping time for that configuration. The N5 MAX is clearly aimed at users who have outgrown the traditional NAS concept. Instead of simply storing your data, it is designed to process, search, manage and work with that data locally, while providing the computing resources needed for modern AI workloads. With a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, Radeon 8060S graphics, up to 128GB of high-bandwidth unified memory, five HDD bays, five NVMe slots, up to 200TB of storage, dual 10GbE, USB4 v2 and MinisCloud OS, the MINISFORUM N5 MAX is one of the more ambitious attempts yet to merge a high-performance AI computer and a full-featured NAS into a single platform. For anyone building a serious local AI lab, content-creation workstation, private cloud or high-performance home server, the N5 MAX deserves a very close look.
