Snapdragon Wear 2100 powers first connected Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch, from LG

LG stays ahead of the smartwatch curve with the first devices to support Google’s latest Android Wear 2.0 software: the LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, both were designed in collaboration with Google and built for those with fitness or fashion in mind..

Android Wear 2.0

Android Wear 2.0 is a step up from the first iteration of the smartwatch software — and not just in name. The smartwatches come with new apps onboard including Google Fit, which helps wearers work toward their fitness goals, and Google Assistant, an AI concierge that responds to voice commands. Thousands of other apps can be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store, without having to connect to a phone. In the US and UK, the LG Watch Sport supports for Android Pay, users can make payments by simply tapping their wrist to the reader.

Speaking of connections, both smartwatches come with support for Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.2 courtesy of the Snapdragon Wear 2100. On top of that, the LG Sport is the first Android Wear smartwatch using Snapdragon Wear 2100 to feature 4G LTE connectivity.

The processor, which is 30 percent smaller than previous generations, also has an integrated sensor hub that collects more precise and richer data (from exercise or navigation apps, for example) to get a better picture of the wearer. And it’s designed to do so without sacrificing power; in fact, the processor uses 25 percent less power than its predecessor.

The Watch Sport and Watch Style both have a circular display with a rotating crown that can be turned to scroll through messages, without having to continuously swipe up and down. Wearers can now handwrite or swipe on a keyboard to respond, or choose a response generated by Smart Reply, powered by Google’s machine learning technology.

The LG Watch Sport is, well, sporty-looking with a big 1.38-inch, 480-by-480 P-OLED display. The face is made of Gorilla Glass 3 and has a dust and water resistance rating of IP68 (which means the device is dust resistant and can be submerged for 30 minutes at depths of up to 1.5 meters) — perfect for the active set. The device has two buttons for convenient navigation and integrates multiple sensors, including an accelerometer, barometer, ambient light, GPS, and a PPM sensor (short for photoplethysmogram, which accurately tracks heart rate when the wearer is at rest or active).

The LG Watch Style is slightly smaller, slimmer, and sleeker than its sibling, with a 1.2-inch P-OLED display. It, too, has accelerometer and ambient light sensors, which can help with battery conservation as the Style automatically adjusts its brightness to its environment. Interchangeable, leather, and silicone bands are available for the smartwatch, so owners can switch up their style.

The LG Watch Style and LG Watch Sport will be on display at our booth (Hall 3, Stand 3E10) at Mobile World Congress (MWC).
