Meet LAMTTO RC16 – A Practical CarPlay and Android Auto Upgrade Without Replacing Your Factory Head Unit
Modern Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration can make even an older vehicle feel considerably more contemporary, but upgrading a factory infotainment system is not always straightforward. Replacing the original head unit can involve dashboard disassembly, wiring adapters, CAN bus compatibility issues and potentially significant installation costs, particularly in vehicles where the factory multimedia system controls functions beyond basic audio playback. The LAMTTO RC16 9.26-inch Wireless Car Stereo approaches the problem from a much simpler direction. Rather than replacing anything already installed in the vehicle, it adds a standalone widescreen display to the dashboard or windshield, providing wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside GPS navigation through the connected smartphone, Bluetooth audio, FM transmission, AUX output, voice control, smartphone screen mirroring and optional reversing-camera functionality. After spending time with the RC16 and examining how its different connectivity options work together, I found its greatest strength is precisely this uncomplicated approach: it brings many of the conveniences associated with a modern infotainment system into a vehicle without requiring permanent modifications.
The LAMTTO RC16 arrives as a relatively complete upgrade package rather than simply providing the display and leaving the mounting and connectivity arrangements to the user. Inside the box I found the 9.26-inch portable CarPlay display itself, the vehicle power adapter with Type-C connection, an AUX cable and two different mounting solutions, including a suction-cup bracket and an adhesive dashboard-style base. This corresponds closely with the supplied manual, which identifies the display, power cord, AUX cable and the two mounting arrangements, while also confirming that the display incorporates a 1600 × 600 touch panel together with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, FM transmission and Type-C power connectivity. Providing both mounting methods is more important than it initially appears. Vehicle dashboards vary enormously in shape, texture and available flat surface area, so a mounting system that works perfectly in one car may be completely impractical in another. The suction mount gives considerably more freedom when positioning the RC16 on the windshield, whereas the adhesive base creates a lower-profile dashboard installation where sufficient space is available. The package therefore creates a good first impression because virtually everything required for basic installation is already present. There is no need to remove the original radio, purchase a fascia adapter or begin dismantling the dashboard before the system can be used.
The defining feature of the RC16 is naturally its 9.26-inch ultrawide display, and I think LAMTTO has chosen the format intelligently. A portable infotainment screen needs to be large enough for navigation information to remain legible at a glance while simultaneously avoiding the oversized tablet-like appearance that can obstruct too much of the driver’s forward view. At 1600 × 600 pixels, the panel has an unusually wide aspect ratio that suits automotive applications particularly well. Maps can display useful information without feeling compressed, while CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces have enough horizontal space for navigation, media and shortcut elements to coexist comfortably. The relatively shallow height is equally important. Rather than placing a conventional tablet-sized rectangle high above the dashboard, the RC16 spreads its screen area horizontally, making it easier to position close to the top of the dashboard while preserving visibility through the windshield. The chassis itself follows the understated design expected from an aftermarket automotive display. It does not attempt to imitate a permanently integrated factory head unit, and I actually prefer that approach because the unit remains visibly portable and can be repositioned or removed without leaving the dashboard permanently altered. LAMTTO also uses passive cooling according to the supplied documentation, eliminating the need for a small internal cooling fan and therefore avoiding another potential source of cabin noise. The manual specifies support for 12–24V vehicle power systems and a 5V/3A output from the supplied power arrangement.
Installation is one of the strongest arguments for choosing the RC16 over a conventional aftermarket head unit. I could position the display using either mounting system, connect the Type-C power cable to the supplied vehicle adapter and begin configuring the system without touching the factory stereo wiring. That simplicity makes the RC16 particularly attractive for leased vehicles, older cars that are not worth extensively modifying, vehicles with unusually integrated factory infotainment systems, or users who simply do not want to disassemble their dashboards. There is one technical detail worth respecting. LAMTTO specifically recommends using the supplied vehicle charger, noting that insufficient voltage or incompatible chargers can interfere with CarPlay operation and FM transmission. In practical terms, I would therefore keep the original power adapter with the unit rather than replacing it with an arbitrary USB charger simply because another adapter happens to fit. Once powered, the home interface provides direct access to the principal functions, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, audio output, Bluetooth and system settings, with additional controls positioned along the side of the interface for common operations such as brightness and volume.
Wireless CarPlay is one of the RC16’s headline features and arguably the reason many buyers will consider the product in the first place. Initial pairing requires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the iPhone. After establishing the Bluetooth connection and approving CarPlay, the wireless link handles the integration between the smartphone and display. The manual also indicates that, once configured, the RC16 attempts to reconnect automatically to the previously connected phone when powered on. In everyday use, this changes the character of an older vehicle considerably. Instead of mounting the phone separately and interacting with a relatively small screen, I can leave the handset alone and use the RC16 for compatible navigation, calls, messages, music and other CarPlay applications. The convenience of wireless operation should not be underestimated. A system that requires plugging in the phone on every short journey tends to become something I use selectively; an automatically reconnecting system becomes part of the normal starting routine of the car. Siri integration is equally useful because voice control reduces the need to interact physically with the screen. Directions, calls, messages and music requests can be handled through the familiar Apple ecosystem while the phone remains out of my hands.
LAMTTO has taken essentially the same approach with Android Auto. After selecting Android Auto on the RC16 and pairing the smartphone through Bluetooth, the system establishes the wireless connection required for Android Auto operation. LAMTTO’s manual specifies Android 8.0 or later for Google Pixel phones and Android 11 or later for other Android devices, and it notes that the Wi-Fi connection is established automatically after Bluetooth pairing rather than requiring the user to connect manually to the display’s Wi-Fi network. Once connected, the familiar Android Auto environment makes the RC16 feel much closer to a contemporary integrated infotainment system than a simple external monitor. Navigation, communications, music and compatible applications are presented through an interface specifically designed for in-car use, while Google Assistant provides the corresponding hands-free voice layer.
It is important to understand what “GPS navigation” means in a product of this type. The RC16 primarily leverages navigation from the connected smartphone through CarPlay or Android Auto rather than functioning like an old standalone GPS navigator that stores its own maps locally. I actually consider this an advantage. Using smartphone navigation means access to continuously updated mapping services, live traffic information and familiar applications without manually downloading large map packages or periodically installing navigation database updates. A destination selected through Apple Maps, Google Maps or another supported navigation application can be displayed on the considerably larger 9.26-inch screen, while voice guidance is routed through the selected audio system. For drivers accustomed to navigating directly from a phone, the improvement is therefore less about introducing GPS capability and more about presenting that existing navigation ecosystem in a safer, larger and more automotive-friendly format.
Connectivity is another area where the RC16 is more flexible than a basic portable CarPlay monitor. LAMTTO advertises upgraded Bluetooth connectivity alongside dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz Wi-Fi support, while the system provides several ways of getting audio into the vehicle. Depending on the car, sound can be played through the RC16 itself, transmitted through Bluetooth, sent through FM or routed directly into an AUX input. The manual explicitly documents speaker, Bluetooth audio, FM and AUX as the available audio-output modes. Where the vehicle supports suitable Bluetooth audio, that is generally the most convenient arrangement because it avoids another physical cable running across the dashboard. AUX remains an excellent alternative in older vehicles because it provides a straightforward wired signal path with minimal configuration. FM transmission extends compatibility even further for cars without either of those options, although FM inherently depends more heavily on finding a sufficiently clear frequency in the local radio spectrum. This flexibility is one of the reasons the “universal” concept works reasonably well. The RC16 does not assume that every vehicle has the same audio hardware.
Voice interaction becomes especially useful with a portable display because the objective should always be to minimize physical interaction while driving. With Siri through CarPlay or Google Assistant through Android Auto, I can request navigation directions, initiate calls, control compatible music playback or handle supported messaging operations without navigating through multiple touchscreen menus. LAMTTO integrates a microphone into the system for these interactions, and the resulting workflow makes considerably more sense than treating the RC16 simply as an enlarged smartphone display. CarPlay and Android Auto are at their best when the touchscreen provides visual information while voice control handles many of the actual commands.
Beyond its automotive functions, the RC16 supports smartphone mirroring, expanding its usefulness when the vehicle is stationary or when passengers want to use the larger display. For iPhone users, the manual documents AirPlay-based transfer of video, audio and images using Wi-Fi and iOS Screen Mirroring. Android Cast is also provided, although LAMTTO notes that the Android phone must support Wi-Fi Direct and uses its specified mirroring application. This feature makes considerably more sense for passengers than for the driver. On a long journey, the screen can become a convenient entertainment display for suitable mirrored content while parked or for passenger viewing where safe and legal. I would not treat video mirroring as a driving feature; its value lies in giving the hardware a secondary purpose beyond navigation and vehicle infotainment.
The RC16 can also operate with a rear-view camera, turning the display into a reversing monitor when the appropriate camera configuration is installed. LAMTTO’s promotional material describes a waterproof camera with four LEDs, a long rear-camera cable and adjustable parking guidelines. The installation arrangement requires more work than installing the RC16 itself because the camera must be mounted at the rear of the vehicle and its trigger wire connected to the positive lead of the reversing lamp. The supplied manual illustrates precisely this arrangement and additionally states that the reversing camera does not support video recording, an important distinction for anyone expecting the RC16 to double as a dashcam system. Another useful feature is parking-line calibration. The software allows the position and angle of the guidelines to be adjusted after the vehicle has been positioned correctly within a parking space, which helps compensate for differences in camera mounting height and position. For an older vehicle without a factory reversing camera, this can substantially increase the practical value of the overall installation.
The RC16 provides more configuration options than its relatively straightforward home interface initially suggests. The settings documented in the manual include reversing configuration, screen saver options, auto dimming, driving-position selection, language, touch assistance, connection clearing, factory reset and firmware information. I particularly appreciate having brightness and screen-related controls readily available because automotive displays operate under unusually difficult lighting conditions. A screen that looks excellent during daylight can become distracting at night if brightness cannot be reduced sufficiently, so quick access to display adjustment is much more important here than on an ordinary indoor tablet. The interface itself remains intentionally uncomplicated. That is appropriate for this category of hardware: once the phone is connected, I spend most of my time inside CarPlay or Android Auto anyway, meaning the manufacturer’s native interface primarily needs to provide reliable access to connections, audio routing and configuration.
LAMTTO also advertises OTA firmware upgrading, which potentially gives the RC16 a longer useful life than a completely static infotainment accessory. Wireless firmware distribution allows compatibility fixes and software refinements to be delivered without physically replacing the hardware. I would nevertheless distinguish firmware updates from application or navigation updates. The RC16’s primary CarPlay and Android Auto experience continues to depend substantially on the connected smartphone and its ecosystem, while firmware updates concern the underlying display hardware and its own software environment.
What impressed me most about the LAMTTO RC16 was not any single specification but the way several relatively simple technologies combine to modernize an older dashboard without turning the upgrade into an installation project. The wide 9.26-inch display provides a much more comfortable navigation surface than a smartphone, yet its proportions allow it to sit relatively unobtrusively above the dashboard. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto eliminate the repetitive cable connection normally associated with inexpensive aftermarket solutions, while the multiple audio-output methods make the system adaptable to vehicles from very different generations. There are inevitable compromises compared with a professionally installed integrated head unit. The RC16 remains a visible external device, requires its own power cable, and depending on the installation there may be additional wiring for AUX or the reversing camera. It also cannot reproduce the seamless physical integration of a factory infotainment display. However, those compromises are inseparable from its main advantage: nothing significant has to be removed or permanently replaced. For me, that trade-off makes considerable sense in an older vehicle. I retain the original stereo and all factory functionality while adding the smartphone integration I actually use every day.
The LAMTTO RC16 9.26-inch Wireless Car Stereo is a convincing example of how much functionality can now be added to an older vehicle without replacing its factory infotainment hardware. Its 1600 × 600 ultrawide touchscreen is well suited to navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto provide the two smartphone ecosystems most drivers actually need, while Siri and Google Assistant integration, multiple audio-output methods, smartphone mirroring and reversing-camera support broaden the system beyond basic phone projection. Its strongest quality is accessibility. I do not need specialist installation knowledge, a vehicle-specific fascia, wiring adapters or a completely new head unit to gain a substantially more modern interface. Mount the screen, provide power, pair the smartphone and select an appropriate audio-output method, and the essential upgrade is already complete. I would particularly recommend the RC16 for older vehicles without factory CarPlay or Android Auto, cars where replacing the integrated head unit would be difficult or expensive, leased vehicles where permanent modifications are undesirable, and drivers who want modern navigation and voice control without redesigning their dashboard.
It cannot deliver the completely integrated appearance of an OEM infotainment system, and installing the reversing camera introduces additional wiring work, but those are reasonable compromises for a portable solution with such broad compatibility. After using the LAMTTO RC16, I see it less as a replacement car stereo and more accurately as a portable infotainment upgrade layer: it leaves the vehicle’s existing system intact while adding the navigation, connectivity, voice assistance and smartphone integration expected from a much newer car. For the right vehicle, that combination of simplicity, functionality and reversibility makes the RC16 a genuinely useful upgrade rather than merely another screen attached to the dashboard.
