Meet Niwalker N50S Flashlight
Compact flashlights are normally designed around convenience, moderate output and a wide beam that works well at short distances. The Niwalker N50S takes a noticeably different approach. Although it remains small enough to qualify as an everyday-carry flashlight, its oversized reflector and high-intensity LED are engineered to produce a tightly concentrated beam capable of reaching far beyond what I would ordinarily expect from a light of this size. Niwalker describes the N50S as a compact “pocket thrower,” and that description accurately captures its character. This is not simply a small flashlight made exceptionally bright. Its defining feature is the way it concentrates that output into a narrow, powerful hotspot designed for identifying objects at considerable distances. The manufacturer specifies a maximum output of 1,750 lumens—sometimes rounded to 1,800 lumens in the product documentation—together with a remarkable maximum beam distance of 965 metres and a peak intensity of 232,806 candela. The N50S is also offered in two configurations. The shorter model uses an 18350 battery and prioritizes portability, while the extended version accepts a higher-capacity 18650 battery for longer operating times. This dual-format concept allows the flashlight to serve as either an extremely compact EDC tool or a more endurance-oriented outdoor light without changing its fundamental design and interface.
My first impression during the unboxing was that Niwalker has built the N50S around function rather than unnecessary presentation. The flashlight immediately looks more purposeful than a conventional pocket light, primarily because of the relationship between its compact battery tube and relatively large reflector. Even before switching it on, the proportions suggest that beam distance has been given priority over flood illumination. The anodized aluminum body feels dense and reassuring in the hand, while the machined surfaces, prominent cooling fins and stainless-steel bezel create the impression of a much more substantial lighting instrument. The side-mounted electronic switch is easy to locate visually and by touch, and the integrated USB-C charging port means the battery can be replenished inside the flashlight without requiring a separate external charger. The two available battery configurations give the unboxing experience an additional point of interest. In its 18350 form, the N50S measures approximately 99 mm in length and weighs around 128 grams with the battery installed. With the 18650 tube, its length increases to approximately 132 mm and its working weight rises to around 180 grams. Both versions share a 38 mm head diameter, so the main difference is the length and balance of the battery section rather than the optical system.
Once in the hand, the N50S feels unlike many slim EDC flashlights. The 38 mm head is clearly larger than the battery tube, but this is an intentional design decision rather than wasted bulk. A deep, wide reflector is essential for producing the concentrated, high-intensity beam that gives the flashlight its unusually long reach. The shorter 18350 configuration is the more impressive option from a portability perspective. At only 99 mm long, it can disappear into a jacket pocket, small equipment pouch or compact emergency kit while still providing access to the same powerful optical system. Its slightly head-heavy balance is noticeable, although the short body makes it easy to hold securely. The 18650 configuration feels more conventional and better balanced. Its longer tube provides additional space for the hand and supports a 3,500 mAh battery, making it the more practical choice for extended outdoor use. The compact 18350 model uses a 1,400 mAh battery and is better suited to users who place minimum size above maximum runtime. What immediately separates the N50S from an ordinary EDC light is its beam profile. The central hotspot is narrow, intense and clearly optimized for distance. It can reveal details much farther away than a typical compact flood-oriented flashlight, making it particularly useful for checking a distant path, identifying objects across open ground, inspecting the perimeter of a property or searching a large outdoor area. This specialized beam does involve a trade-off. At very short distances, a broad floodlight can feel more natural because it illuminates a larger portion of the immediate surroundings. The N50S instead places most of its visual emphasis exactly where it is pointed. For users who understand that distinction and genuinely need long-range visibility, its focused character is one of its greatest strengths.
The flashlight body is manufactured from AL6061-T6 aluminum alloy, a material commonly selected for performance flashlights because it combines strength, manageable weight and efficient heat transfer. The exterior receives a military-grade hard-anodized finish, giving the N50S a durable surface that should resist everyday scratches and wear better than ordinary painted metal. Machining appears purposeful throughout the design. Deep longitudinal channels around the head contribute visual character while also helping with grip, and the pronounced fins behind the reflector increase the available surface area for dissipating heat. This thermal design becomes especially important at Turbo output, where the LED and driver generate considerably more heat than they do in the lower modes. A stainless-steel bezel protects the front of the flashlight and adds durability around the lens. Its shaped edges also allow it to function as an emergency glass-breaking tool. This may be useful when the N50S is stored in a vehicle or carried as part of an emergency kit, although it should naturally be treated as an emergency feature rather than an everyday use case. Niwalker rates the N50S to IP65, providing protection against dust and water jets. It should therefore cope comfortably with rain, wet outdoor environments and the general exposure associated with camping or hiking. It is not presented as a deep-submersion light, so users should respect the difference between weather resistance and full underwater capability. The body is also specified to withstand drops from up to one metre, adding another layer of reassurance for field use. The tail section incorporates a magnet that allows the flashlight to attach to many suitable steel surfaces. Despite being promoted primarily as a long-range handheld light, this feature significantly broadens its usefulness. It can be fixed to a vehicle panel, metal cabinet, workshop structure or other ferromagnetic surface when temporary hands-free illumination is required.
The N50S uses a side-mounted electronic switch rather than a conventional mechanical tail switch. Its position is convenient during a standard forward grip, and the control interface offers direct access to the most important functions without filling the body with additional buttons. A single press switches the flashlight on or off. When the light is already operating, holding the switch cycles through four regular brightness levels. The N50S remembers the last standard mode used, so it can return to a familiar brightness the next time it is activated. Moonlight mode is accessed by holding the switch while the flashlight is off. This provides a gentle 10-lumen output that is far better suited to close work, checking equipment inside a tent or moving around without producing excessive glare. Turbo can be reached from any mode with a double press, while a triple press activates Strobe. Five rapid presses engage the electronic lockout, with the flashlight flashing three times to confirm that it has been locked. Repeating the five-press command unlocks it. This is an important addition for an EDC flashlight capable of such high output because it helps prevent accidental activation inside a pocket or bag. The N50S also includes a more detailed battery-voltage monitor. Four presses while the flashlight is off activate the readout, after which a sequence of slow and fast flashes communicates the present voltage. Three slow flashes followed by nine rapid flashes, for example, represent approximately 3.9 volts. It is not as immediately visual as a screen or multi-colour indicator, but it gives experienced users a more precise idea of remaining battery condition. Integrated USB-C charging makes daily ownership considerably easier. Instead of removing the cell and placing it in a dedicated charger after every use, I can connect a standard USB-C cable directly to the flashlight. This is especially convenient while travelling, when the same power adapter or power bank can be used for multiple devices.
The N50S provides six brightness levels covering everything from discreet close-range illumination to maximum-distance output. Turbo delivers up to 1,750 lumens, while High provides 700 lumens. The two intermediate levels are rated at 450 and 175 lumens, followed by a 65-lumen Low mode and a 10-lumen Moonlight setting. Using the 3,500 mAh 18650 battery, Niwalker lists approximate runtimes of 63 minutes on Turbo, 70 minutes on High, two hours at 450 lumens, five hours and 50 minutes at 175 lumens, 15 hours at 65 lumens and 40 hours in the 10-lumen Moonlight mode. Actual performance will naturally vary according to battery condition, ambient temperature, airflow and the flashlight’s thermal regulation. The distinction between lumens and beam intensity is important here. Some flashlights advertise higher lumen figures but spread their light across a very wide area. The N50S combines strong output with an extremely concentrated optical system, which is why its 232,806-candela intensity and claimed 965-metre throw are more revealing than the lumen figure alone. As with any compact high-output flashlight, Turbo is best understood as a temporary maximum-performance setting. The aluminum body conducts heat away from the LED, and the head can become noticeably warm during sustained operation. For continuous walking or general outdoor illumination, the middle modes offer a more sensible balance between visibility, comfort and battery life.
During normal use, I found that the N50S works best as a specialized long-distance companion rather than as a universal room-filling flashlight. The 175-lumen and 450-lumen modes provide enough output for most outdoor movement, while High and Turbo are available when I need to inspect something significantly farther away. The 65-lumen Low setting is appropriate for closer surroundings and preserves battery capacity, while Moonlight avoids overwhelming reflections when reading labels, searching through a bag or using the flashlight inside a confined space. Having these lower levels is particularly important because the focused beam can otherwise feel unnecessarily intense at short distances. For camping and hiking, the N50S can illuminate distant trail markers, terrain features or unexpected movement beyond the practical range of an ordinary pocket light. Around a home or rural property, it is suitable for checking gates, fences, outbuildings and dark corners of a large garden. Its combination of strong throw, weather-resistant construction and battery flexibility also makes it a useful addition to a vehicle emergency kit. The 18350 version is the configuration I would choose for true everyday carry because its 99 mm body is exceptionally compact. The 18650 version is better for longer trips, professional use or situations where runtime is more important than saving a few centimetres of pocket space. The modular concept makes the N50S considerably more adaptable than a flashlight tied permanently to a single body length. There are still a few practical compromises to consider. The broad head is larger than that of a conventional pen-style EDC light, and the narrow beam is less effective when the goal is to illuminate an entire room or a very wide nearby area. The side switch may also require a brief moment to locate in complete darkness, although the electronic lockout and convenient shortcuts compensate with a flexible interface once the controls become familiar.
The Niwalker N50S is a remarkably capable compact flashlight built around one clear priority: delivering genuine long-range visibility from a body that remains practical to carry. Its intense central beam, claimed 965-metre reach and peak intensity of 232,806 candela place it far beyond the performance normally associated with an everyday-carry light. I particularly appreciate that Niwalker has not treated output as the flashlight’s only selling point. The choice between 18350 and 18650 battery formats, integrated USB-C charging, magnetic tail, six brightness levels, voltage monitor, electronic lockout and weather-resistant aluminum construction all contribute to a much more complete product. Its focused beam and relatively wide head mean that it will not replace a compact floodlight in every situation. However, that specialization is also precisely what makes the N50S memorable. For outdoor enthusiasts, property owners, professionals or EDC users who want exceptional reach without carrying a full-sized searchlight, the Niwalker N50S delivers an unusually persuasive combination of portability, rugged construction and concentrated performance.
